GNA Strategy:

  • Develop a scaled market entry strategy to begin to make investments in natural gas trucks
  • Secure available incentive funding to initial ease purchasing costs
  • Analyze available public fueling infrastructure and onsite fuel station development
  • Ensure proper maintenance shop facility upgrades
  • Promote initiative to customers and the community
  • Provide safety training for drivers and company personnel

Project Results:

  • Over $20 million in federal, state, and local grants secured: GNA identified available incentive funding, and wrote and submitted detailed grant applications on behalf of Ryder for infrastructure, facility modifications, and truck purchases. Funding was secured through the US DOE’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, California Energy Commission, and South Coast Air Quality Management District funding solicitations.
  • Development of the largest single natural gas truck deployment project in the nation: The incentive funds GNA helped secure were used in the deployment of more than 200 heavy-duty natural gas trucks across three Southern California locations. This was a first-of-its-kind project where heavy-duty NGVs were deployed in a rental and leasing vehicle operation, and also represents the single largest commercial NGV deployment in the nation’s history.
  • Construction of two LNG/LCNG refueling stations and upgrade of three maintenance shop facilities: GNA provided the fuel station design, layout, specifications and all bid documents for the development of two publicly accessible natural gas fueling stations at Ryder locations. GNA managed the procurement and vendor selection process and provided extensive permitting support, construction management assistance and oversight, and final start-up and acceptance testing for these stations and the complete facility modifications at three maintenance shop locations to service the natural gas vehicles.
  • Significant reduction of emissions and fuel costs: Ryder’s initial deployment of more than 200 natural gas trucks will replace more than 1.5 million gallons of diesel use annually with clean burning domestically produced fuels and will save millions of dollars in fuel costs. This project reduces more than 9.2 million pounds (4,195 metric tons) of greenhouse gas emissions per year, more than 131 tons of nitrogen oxide emissions annually, and eliminates 2.65 tons of diesel particulate emissions from local neighborhoods.
  • Educational videos and websites created to help further adoption of the new vehicles: GNA produced LNG- and CNG-fueler training videos to support Ryder’s efforts, and also assisted in the development of a “Fuel Station Finder” tool—all of which is available on the Ryder Alternative Fuels website. GNA also developed and maintains the website dedicated to showcasing the Ryder/SANBAG NGV Project in addition to supporting a number of other marketing and communications activities.
  • Ribbon cutting ceremony planned to commemorate momentous project effort: All of the public agencies that supported Ryder’s efforts participated in the event and GNA assisted to coordinate many of the event logistics, media outreach, and other elements of the ceremony.
