GNA Strategy:

  • Perform fleet planning and evaluate various natural gas truck and engine platforms and technologies, including a variety natural gas fuel system options
  • Perform physical inspection of maintenance facilities at Frito-Lay’s sites to allow for indoor maintenance of NGVs
  • Confirm which of Frito-Lay’s routes are most conducive to natural gas truck operations
  • Assess regional natural gas refueling infrastructure to determine the viability of using existing infrastructure to support the deployment of natural gas trucks
  • Assist Frito-Lay and its parent company Pepsico to understand and comply with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Truck and Bus regulations

Project Results:

  • Construction of Frito-Lay’s first CNG refueling station and upgrade of the maintenance shop facilities: GNA managed the initial design and procurement process for the development of Frito-Lay’s first compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station at its Beloit, WI location. GNA also assisted with facility modification designs at the Beloit facility’s maintenance shop to allow for indoor maintenance of its new NGVs.
  • Completion of facility modifications at additional Frito-Lay locations: GNA also prepared facility modification reports for Frito-Lay hauling operations in Phoenix, AZ; Torrance, CA; Buena Park, CA; Rancho Cucamonga, CA; Salt Lake City, UT; West Valley, UT; Irving, TX; and Frankfort, IN. GNA reviewed each of these locations for compliance with applicable regulations and provided guidance on the steps necessary to bring each facility up to code for natural gas vehicle maintenance.
  • Developed a first-of-its-kind Anchor Tenant Fueling Station RFP: GNA developed and managed a request for proposals (RFP) encouraging natural gas station builders to expand existing fueling infrastructure. This innovative project called for the construction and operation of a minimum of seven public-access compressed natural gas (CNG) stations in areas near Frito-Lay hauling operations. Construction of these seven CNG stations is now underway and Frito-Lay will act as the anchor customer near its facilities in Topeka, KS; Charlotte, NC; Rosenberg, TX; Orlando, FL; Perry, CA; Jonesboro, AK; and Killingly, CT.
  • Recognition of GNA as Frito-Lay “Supplier of the Year”: In 2013, GNA received the Frito-Lay “Supplier of the Year” Award as a result of its extensive work with Frito-Lay’s fleet and compliance teams, specifically assisting them with the development of their nationwide natural gas vehicle fleet program and compliance efforts in California.
  • Development of a 2014 RFP for anchor tenant fuel station development: As a result of the success of the first year of Frito-Lay’s Anchor Tenant RFP, GNA is now preparing to release the next round of CNG stations that Frito-Lay will anchor around the U.S. in 2014.
