California Cartage Honored As Recipient Of Los Angeles County Board Of Supervisors' 2010 "Green Leadership Award"

Award recognizes efforts to improve environmental sustainability throughout Los Angeles County.

LOS ANGELES, CA - April 20, 2010 - The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors today honored California Cartage Company (Cal Cartage) and its President, Robert Curry, with a "2010 Green Leadership Award" in recognition of significant accomplishments in the areas of energy conservation and environmental sustainability. The award cast a bright spotlight on the "California Cartage Company Natural Gas Port Truck Project"—a revolutionary undertaking that has greatly contributed to the San Pedro Bay Port complex possibly being the cleanest port truck operation in the nation. The honor was presented in Los Angeles during the Supervisors meeting at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration and was part of celebrations designed to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.

Gladstein, Neandross & Associates (GNA) has collaborated with Cal Cartage for several years on the development of an alternative fuels strategy that includes the deployment of low-emission and cutting-edge technologies throughout the company's operations. This effort has resulted in a significant reduction in air pollution and the displacement of millions of gallons of petroleum fuel. "The Cal Cartage project was absolutely a game-changer in that it has served as an excellent model for replication," commented GNA Chief Executive Officer Erik Neandross. "While projects of this large scale aren't always easy to assemble, the innovative financing model used by Cal Cartage was well-supported by project partners and really worked for the local port truck drivers. The Green Leadership Award was certainly well-deserved and a great honor for the company."

The Green Leadership Awards were presented in several categories for accomplishments in a variety of areas including transportation, energy, water, sustainability, outreach, and education. Additional recipients of 2010 awards included:

  • The Los Angeles and San Gabriel Rivers Watershed Council for the "Elmer Avenue Neighborhood Retrofit Project"
  • City of Pasadena for the "Sustainability Metrics Program"
  • Joe Linton for "LA Creek Freak Blogger"
  • Ashley Zarella Hand, Chair, Sustainability Committee for "Community-Driven Change"

Cal Cartage operates the largest port drayage company in Los Angeles County. In response to a strong call to reduce emissions from the ports, the company developed and implemented the "California Cartage Company Natural Gas Port Truck Project" the largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) truck deployment project in the nation. Their efforts have resulted in a revolutionary lease-to-own program with 350 LNG trucks currently serving the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Within weeks, Cal Cartage will add an additional 50 natural gas trucks to its operation and their fleet will soon represent nearly 50% of all alternative fuel trucks in the San Pedro Bay Ports.
