GNA Cleans Up On U.S. DOE Clean Cities Funding
GNA-Assisted Projects Land $53.8 Million in U.S. DOE Clean Cities Funding for 860 Natural Gas and Hybrid Trucks and 15 Natural Gas Fueling Stations

WASHINGTON, DC – August 30, 2009 – On one of the most successful days in its 15-year history, Gladstein, Neandross & Associates (GNA) helped its clients secure nearly 20% of all stimulus funding awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Clean Cities Program.

On August 26, 2009, Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. DOE Secretary Steven Chu announced awards totaling $300 million in grant funding through the DOE Clean Cities Program. Over 100 applications were submitted, seeking nearly $1 billion in funding. Of the 25 applications awarded funding, 11 included projects assisted by GNA.

The 11 awards that included GNA-assisted projects were approved for a total $132,954,677 of the $300 million in DOE Clean Cities Program funding (44% of the total). Four of these 11 applications were written entirely by GNA, and the other seven included elements that were written by GNA. The proposals written by GNA as part of these 11 applications were awarded $53,829,531 in DOE funding (18% of the total).

“Going into this process, the GNA team developed a solid strategy on how to find the best projects and how to submit winning applications,” explained Erik Neandross, CEO of Gladstein, Neandross & Associates. “We do this with each grant program we look at and DOE’s announcement clearly demonstrates that our strategy was again spot on.”

In total, GNA-assisted projects will result in the deployment of 860 alternative fuel and hybrid trucks and the construction of 15 natural gas fueling stations across the United States. Many of the applications submitted by GNA to the DOE Clean Cities Program will result in some of the nation’s largest deployments of heavy-duty natural gas and hybrid trucks to date and will significantly expand several of the country’s clean fuel corridors.

J.B. Hunt, one of the nation’s leading fleet operators, will deploy 262 LNG-powered Freightliner M2 trucks in its Southern California operations and will build two publicly accessible LNG fueling stations. The new fueling facilities will serve J.B. Hunt’s fleet and the large number of LNG trucks now being deployed in the San Pedro Bay Ports and elsewhere throughout the region. This will be the largest single deployment of natural gas on-road trucks in the history of the United States.

United Parcel Service (UPS), the largest fleet operator in the U.S., will deploy 150 LNG trucks that will operate between its Southern California and Salt Lake City depots. To support these clean burning LNG trucks, UPS will construct three publicly accessible LNG/LCNG refueling stations at its Las Vegas, Beaver (UT), and Salt Lake City fleet yards. Combined with UPS’s existing public access LNG station in Ontario, California, these three new stations will provide critical fueling points for other light, medium and heavy duty natural gas vehicle users traveling along Interstate 15 and the Interstate Clean Transportation Corridor (ICTC). This LNG fueling infrastructure will provide a sustainable clean fuel corridor from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach all the way to Salt Lake City, Utah.

In the largest hybrid truck deployment to date, 240 hybrid electric and hybrid electric hydraulic hybrid trucks will be put in service by Sysco Foods, UPS, Nestle Waters North America, and Aramark Uniform Services throughout the United States, with a majority of these advanced technology vehicles to be deployed in Maryland. As part of this effort, UPS will deploy 40 hydraulic hybrid package delivery vans in Atlanta and elsewhere throughout the country. UPS will be the first to commercially deploy this new cutting-edge hydraulic hybrid drive technology.

While New York State has already witnessed strong growth in the natural gas vehicle industry, nearly 100 additional heavy-duty CNG-powered trucks and seven new public access CNG fueling stations will be rolled out in areas ranging from Syracuse to the tip of Long Island by several public and private entities.

“GNA has been working in this field for more than 15 years and these project awards are a reflection of our many years of hard work, dedication and experience,” said Cliff Gladstein, President of GNA. “We are grateful for the opportunity to work with some of the world’s leading engine and truck manufacturers as well as some of the country’s most respected truck fleet operators to develop such groundbreaking advanced transportation projects.

When fully implemented, these 11 projects will result in significant energy security, air quality and economic benefits. The 860 low emission alternative fuel trucks will reduce:

  • 46,240,899 gallons of petroleum demand;
  • 39,268 metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions;
  • 1,583 tons of smog-forming nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions; and,
  • 23.55 tons of dangerous particulate matter (PM) emissions.

In addition to these environmental benefits, these truck and fuel station development efforts will result in a total project investment of $167,804,018 and will create and sustain 1,503 green jobs in the U.S..

“GNA has an exceptional record of success in implementing projects that simultaneously achieve social, environmental, and economic benefits,” commented GNA Senior Vice President Karen Mann. “These projects demonstrate the triple bottom line results that GNA seeks to achieve in all of its efforts; demonstrate how sustainability can be achieved; and provide a model which the ‘green tech’ revolution can follow.”

In addition to technical expertise, project development capabilities, policy and regulatory acumen, and outreach and marketing skills, GNA has a long-standing reputation as a grant program expert. With these awards, GNA has assisted its clients and projects to achieve their business goals by helping them secure over $200 million in grant funding.

“These results were the result of the tremendous time and effort invested by the entire GNA staff and again solidify GNA’s role as the nation’s leading grant writing firm for advanced transportation, alternative fuel vehicle and infrastructure projects,” added Neandross. “With these awards now confirmed, we turn our attention to implementing these projects and helping to achieve the important goals of the DOE Clean Cities Program and the ARRA stimulus funding.”

ABOUT THE ICTC PROJECT
The Interstate Clean Transportation Corridor (ICTC) Project is the most successful planned clean fuel corridor in the nation. The award-winning project was initiated by GNA in 1996 in partnership with the U.S. DOE Clean Cities Program. The ICTC seeks to build partnerships between public and private stakeholders to expand alternative fuel vehicle use and refueling station access throughout the Western United States. The ICTC continues to work to build a sustainable corridor of LNG refueling stations along the I-15, I-80, and I-5 corridors connecting Southern California, Salt Lake City and Northern California in order to support the movement of goods by alternative fuel heavy-duty trucks throughout the Western United States.
